I dunno...

[Maya watches the egg and the wriggling wing with enough calmness to counter the panicked look on Phoenix's face, tapping her chin and lost in thought.]

What do dragons hunt? Rabbits? Deer? Cows?

[He adds a bit meekly.]

W-well, what do dragons always have a habit of capturing in fairy tales...?

Goats?

[Is she casually dancing around the fact that they also attacked and probably ate people in fairy tales, too? Maybe just a little bit.]

I don't know what you're so worried about, Nick! It's not like this one's gonna get to the size o–AH!

[There's another loud CRACK and the other wing sprouts from the other side of the egg.]

It'll get our goats alright!

[But then he's quickly distracted as he witnesses the other wing burst forth! And he quickly fixes his attention it.]

Another wing. Two wings. We have a two winged creature being born here! [He's feeling afraid enough that the floor trembles!]

NICK! Stop it or else the floor's gonna come out from under us and then we're gonna have a two winged creature and a broken bedroom to worry about!

[And despite the brave front she's trying (and failing miserably) to put on, Maya hops behind him and anxiously balls a piece of his shirt up into a fist. When the little wings twitch, she nudges Phoenix forward in its direction with a squeak.]

I'm stopping, I'm stopping!! W-wait, what are you doing?!

[He's... only getting more afraid now as he's nudged towards the egg, and the floor shakes some more. Phoenix looks down towards the egg very sheepishly.]

G-good boy... or girl! Good...!

Taking extra precautions!

[The shaking floor definitely isn't helping the situation and Maya wobbles as she peers around his arm and down at the egg where she can now see the top of a tiny little head. As she goes to kneel in front of it, she unceremoniously pulls Phoenix down with her and smiles sheepishly at the egg and talks to the top of its head with an encouraging lilt in her voice.]

Helloooo...

[As if it understands anything she's about to say?]

Of course...

[He says flatly, but he tries to calm himself, and the shaking dies down somewhat. His eyes widen as he sees the top of that tiny head! And maybe, his heart's starting to melt a little.]

Hi! [He tries to accompany Maya, offering the cracking egg an eerily slow wave of his hand.]

[If only the two of them could see themselves right now and how awkward they must look...

Next comes the tail, stretching out long and tall from behind it and it wriggles back at them.]

Look, look! He's waving!

[And with one more loud crack, the egg breaks into pieces to reveal a tiny blue wyvern laying flat on its stomach, tail and wings up in the air. Maya goes to poke it to make sure it's still alive, but instead grabs Phoenix's wrist and tries to move his own hand to prod at it instead.]

[Phoenix gasps as the tail appears.]

You're right, he- he's waving back to me!

[Clearly that's what it is.

But then, suddenly, the miracle of life unfolds right in front of them. It is really cute, but also scary at the same time. Still, the trembling's all but gone, and the temperature currently feels comfortably warm.]

HI! [He nervously shouts again... and then he finds his hands being guided by Maya's.] Wait - what?

[He doesn't stop her, and so he ends up prodding the baby wyvern.]

Shh, don't yell!

[Yep, there he is prodding the baby wyvern with his finger with Maya's grip firm around his wrist. When the wyvern finally lifts its head from the ground and raises its bright yellow eyes at them, Maya is quick to withdraw both of their hands in surprise, but like Phoenix, her heart is quick to melt. Here it is, in all its funny-looking scaly glory.

She stares at it for a long time while it blinks back at them, and Maya finally looks to Phoenix like she's got something very profound and important to say. Because she does.]

He looks kind of like you.

R-right. Sorry.

[Phoenix winces in fear as his finger pokes against the wyvern, and then suddenly his hand is withdrawn with hers.

And that leaves him free to just take in the sight of the newly born wyvern. Without a doubt, it's precious. Phoenix smiles goofily as he looks at the baby. ...But then he sweatdrops at her comment.]

Like me?! How... how could a baby wyvern possibly look like me??

[She motions to it like it should be obvious to him.]

He's blue. Kind of like your suit... and his eyes remind me of your badge. And those little horns at the top of his head is kind of like your hair.

[Duh. ~~Huh, too bad his name is Phoenix and not Ryuuichi...~~]

I... guess I can't dispute that logic...

[He thinks he sees where this going, and he turns to her with a pleading look.]

...Please don't name him after me.

Well, there goes my first choice! It was a good one, too.

[She huffs at him, loud enough to startle the wyvern into coughing up a puff of smoke, but Maya is far too preoccupied with her indignation at Phoenix's request to even notice.]

You have any better ideas then!?

Don't you think it would get confusing! [Even more than having one that shares a name with their pet plant. He sighs.]

Um... How about... Larry! That's... it's a name!

[Her tone suddenly goes Very Serious and she leans over his shoulder so that she's able to stare him right in the face should he turn around to look at her, and she appears to be very unamused and maybe even a little offended.]

I am not naming a dragon after Larry Butz.

[He doesn't even try to begin to defend it.]

...Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking.

Um... other people, other people... Who else do we know? Doesn't look like a Gumshoe, I can't picture it wielding a whip like Von Karma...

Yeah, me neither.

[She flops back down to sit on the floor behind him, stretching out and leaning back on her hands, watching as the blue wyvern crawls up onto Phoenix's legs.]

He's too cute for either of those names. But do we really have to name him after someone? What about... Tofu? Or Noodle? Or Basil? Biscuit?

[Her stomach rumbles.]

... Burrito?

[Phoenix is distracted for a moment as the wyvern crawls onto his legs. His face seems to shine with brightness as he looks at the baby and feels the tiny wyvern weight on him.]

H-hey there little guy. I'm... Poppa Phoenix?

[and then, as if handling a glass vase, he carefully reaches down to hold the baby up in his arms. He never thought it could feel this wonderful!

But he then raises an eyebrow, giving a delayed reaction to Maya's latest suggestions.]

...Is thinking with your stomach really the best idea? I'm... not sure how I feel about calling a living creature Burrito...

[She slides around Phoenix when he picks up the wyvern, ignoring the way she can literally feel his eyebrows raise at her at her suggestions. Maya pokes at the scaly baby with a finger in the stomach and he lifts his legs to curl up into a ball with a tiny snort, and she giggles.]

Are you saying I should be thinking with something else that isn't my stomach?

[She's kidding. Mostly... Her lips twitch into an innocent smile and she leans against Phoenix to get a better look at the wyvern, also relieved that he hasn't yelled at her for bringing an egg home.]

[He had been ready to yell at her when he first laid eyes on the egg. But then the panic took over, and now that the baby's hatched... he just doesn't have the hurt to get mad about it right in front of the baby.

Phoenix can't help but laugh warmly at the baby's reaction to Maya's gesture, and he jokes back.]

I know he may look cute enough to eat, but that doesn't mean that his name should reflect that!

[For that comment, she swats him on the arm with a speed that she didn't even know she had, and maybe a little bit harder than necessary, too. The sound of her hand hitting him startles the wyvern and he squeaks, burping up another cloud of black smoke.]

Nick! [She's huffing and puffing like a blowfish.] That's not something you joke about! We're not eating the wyvern!

Yow! [He winces and then looks down at the baby.]

C-careful about the baby! I know we're not - but you're the one who started associating him with food to begin with!!

So!? [Oh my god Phoenix have you never met a pet named after food before!?] People name their dogs things like Taco or Sherbert or Caramel and you don't think about eating them, do you?

[Who the hell names their dog Taco? Probably Maya? She falls quiet a moment when a sudden realization hits her and her eyes widen at him.]
